Just A Quick Note

Hello Families,

Just a quick note to shout out about our students who are showing great respect and responsibility when it comes to our school wide 8 Keys!  Jennifer and Shane were chosen from second grade this week.  Way to go!

For March is Reading Month, we are partnering with Jimmy Johns Field to earn a free ticket to a game.  Your child will be bringing home a note explaining more about this.  Our class decided to earn one base per week for the month.  To complete each base, they must read for twenty minutes.  Those can be broken into smaller parts, like ten minutes in the car on the way to something, then ten minutes before bed.  The twenty minutes can be reading on a tablet or computer like in RAZ-KIDS.  You can choose to turn on the captions or subtitles for their favorite TV Show and have them read the lines out loud!  Reading jokes and riddles, or street signs all count toward this goal.  The children can choose to read picture books, chapter books, cook books, etc!  Just have some fun and work on twenty minutes each day.  Oh, yes, that is for five days out of the seven each week.  Once they complete that, fill out the bookmark and send it back to school.  They can do more than twenty minutes, but it is more important that they read five days at twenty or more minutes each of those days.  I really don't want it to be forty minutes on one day and then skip a day or two.  It is better to build a stronger reader by reading EVERY DAY!  Thanks for participating!

Speed math is coming along nicely.  We have more than half the class who have earned their bowl and now a spoon!  The next goal is to get a scoop of ice cream, yum.

Monday is "class shirt day" or "Morgan apparel".  This is  school-wide spirit day!

Monday will also start our PHASE TWO of WRITE and TELL.  I am so proud of the writing that the kids are doing.  They love sharing with our class.  The phase two note has been coming home once your child shared this week.  Look for the small changes in details.

Enjoy the evening!

Enjoying Our Time Together

These smiling faces loved looking at maps, atlas', and our globe today.  This unit which will take us through the next five or six weeks is loaded with geography lessons, science exploration, and world relationships.  We will practice reading maps, building maps, and explore erosion throughout these coming weeks.

As I mentioned yesterday, we started cursive.  Each day we will work on a new letter.  It will take practice to get comfortable with this.  Feel free to encourage your child to practice their name at home.

Please continue to practice using money and telling time.  These are skills we will continue in class, but without regular revisiting, they may forget.

Enjoy the evening and be safe if we get that snow that they are calling for.

Welcome Back!

It was a lovely day in room 14.  The kids were excited to see their classmates and talk about the time away.  We saw a few sun kissed faces return!  Several children enjoyed going to the movies, playing in the fresh snow, skiing, sleep overs, and visiting with grandparents and cousins.

We started cursive.  This is a challenging skill to master.  I will introduce every letter lower case and upper case in a very slow manner until they start to get a better feel for this skill.  I will show them how to write their name as well.  As they become more comfortable with cursive, I will allow them to write their spelling words and other work practicing this craft.

We also started speed math.  Every day, I will set aside five minutes to do a speed math paper.  These will be basic skills of addition and subtraction.  Some students will move to multiplication and division as well.  We will do this for about one month, as long as we do not have a bunch of snow days!  For every two that they pass, the students will get to add something to build an ice cream sundae.  At the end of this class challenge, I will provide an ice cream party to celebrate their ability to work quickly with their math facts.

Grace S. bought a coupon for "Show and Tell".  Today she shared with us her amazing accomplishment with her cheer team at a competition held at Cobo Hall.  Congratulations and thanks for sharing with us!

We also celebrated Shane's birthday, which was yesterday.  The class enjoyed a little extra recess to help him celebrate.

Enjoy the night!

Friday News!

Our week went by quickly.  Here we are at Friday already!

The students did pretty well with their spelling today.  I think they need to generate a few extra words that might fit our weekly patterns.  Several students did miss those today.  But all in all, they are doing well.

I'm so excited about their understanding of large number subtraction!  Please do practice those over the break.  We have a few more lessons before I assess them again.

We completed Unit 3 in our language program.  Upon our return from this break, we jump right in to Unit 4.  Plus mapping skills, understanding landforms, some economics, a speed math challenge, and we will be starting to learn cursive!

The students have one more week of Phase One in their Write and Tell.  The week we return all are due.  I will then send home a new rubric for Phase Two.  Keep up the great support, the children are loving this sharing time!

We had a Flat Stanley return from his adventure in North Carolina.  Be sure to check it out in the Photo Album tab.  I also enjoyed eating lunch with Jenna who used a coupon.

Enjoy the family time together.  those who are traveling, be safe.  Those who are staying home, perhaps I'll see you bowling, at SkyZone, the movies, Menchies, or roller skating!  My husband will be in sunny Fort Lauderdale visiting our son while I'm home with our two active kids running to practices, swim meets, soccer games, appointments, and some of the fun things our community has to offer!

Thank you to our volunteers today and for the supplies that were shared for our friendship celebration!  The goodie bags and boxes are coming home today.  I have found that opening them at home is safer than trying to do it at school.  Plus, you can help them sort the treats so they can enjoy a piece or two each day next week while off from school.

Thank you also for the amazing and thoughtful gifts shared with me.  You are so generous, it brought tears to my eyes.

Take a look at our photos from today.

Happy Valentine's Day!
