Crazy Hair Day...Slime Day!

Each and every year when our school celebrates crazy hair day as a spirit day, it feels a bit crazy with excitement.  What better to do with some excited children than to celebrate slime!

Once we enjoyed a fashion show of funny hairdos, we moved right into animals that slime!

Our morning was filled with science.  We started with a short video to get us thinking about the main topic of our morning and pulled some details from the video to support that.  Then we moved on to a strategy of bold print, vocabulary.  First, we viewed some vocabulary cards that showed a picture to support the words for understanding.  Then, we looked in our Scholastic News to find the bold print words from the expository text that we felt was a clue to build comprehension from the article.  Once we finished building some prior knowledge and vocabulary, we moved right in on the reading portion of the lesson.  Animals and why they slime!  Be sure to reread it with your child and have them tell you all about it.  Finally, we concluded our morning with some slime investigations.  The children were in groups and we had recorders to write down what they were observing, smelling, and touching.  There were seven slimy things to explore.  Upon completion of the exploration, the children were asked to complete a conclusion sheet and share it about what they learned.  It was so much fun!

Tomorrow is the nature center clean up.  If you are free in the morning, please do come to the school and help do some yard work in the nature park behind our school.

Monday, we take our NWEA reading/language arts.  I know it will have some challenging vocabulary on it for the students.  I have tried to give practice lessons, review work, and whole group instruction directly working for success on this upcoming assessment.  Please be sure they get some rest and have a good breakfast.  Thank you!

By Wednesday, all structure projects need to be turned in.  I've seen a couple come in early and they look fantastic!

Thursday is our field day.  Children need to have comfortable clothes and running shoes for the events.  If you'd like to pack something for them to change into after, you are welcome to have it in their backpacks.

Enjoy the beautiful evening and weekend ahead.

It is hard to believe we have two and a half weeks left of second grade!  I'm very proud of the growth that has been taking place in room 14.  I will keep our routine and structure through next week.  Our final week of school will be organized, but the daily routine will be different because we will not have spelling words or write and tells.

This FRIDAY is crazy hair day.  Students are welcomed to enjoy the fun of some wacky hairdos.

We will take our language arts NWEA on Monday.  Please be sure the children are well rested for Monday and have a good breakfast.  Thanks!

Enjoy the evening!

Our morning was enjoyed while learning about Colonial Jobs.  Several fifth grade siblings had a captive audience.  I was very impressed with the hard work put into those projects.
Then, this afternoon, our class visited Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Harnden's rooms to share our posters.

ISM Homework

Hello Families,
I wanted to be sure you take a look in your child's folder tonight.  ISM sent home a homework explanation sheet.  The students have been learning about structures and they will have a chance to build one!  In the past, this project has been a lot of fun.  I'm sure your creative child will enjoy as well.

Thank you for allowing your child to bring in their technology device today.  They enjoyed some free time with each other and sharing games, texts, and photos.  Then, this afternoon, we played Kahoot!  This was fun for them to use their own device instead of the schools.

Tomorrow, if your child would like to bring in a board game, we will make some time to play in cooperative groups.

The biography posters are looking good.  This is their own work, I did not show an example.  However, I did show them the same paper that went home and some photos of students from past years.  I allowed them to cut out the research they did at home or rewrite it to be more creative.  Extra colored paper was available, along with crayons, colored pencils, and markers.  They will present their posters tomorrow to our class then on Friday we present to all second grade.  This is a big project for them and it will be a good foundation for the grades to come.

Just a reminder, no school on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Field Day will be June 6.  Second grade participates in the morning.  If we have water games, please send in dry clothes and shoes just in case they are needed.  Our air is turned on and the room gets chilly.

Enjoy the evening!
