First off, thank you so much for the parents who volunteered today to help with our stations.  Days like this cannot happen without your help.  Second, all the amazing donations!  Thank you so much, the children where happy to have a little change during their snack today.

You will be able to see several photos that were taken today in the PHOTO ALBUM tab.  Thank you Mrs. Ede for moving with the students today and taking the pictures for us.  It was fun to see all the costumes and to watch them have so much joy in school.

Tomorrow we will continue our science fun.  Don't forget we have long and short u words this week on our spelling test.

Happy Birthday, Julia!

Congratulations Ben on losing a tooth!

Keep warm and safe tonight!

Congratulations to Ben for winning at the Halloween Bingo last week.  His prize was to bring in a stuffie to school.  It was nice having Pikachu all day, he was very quiet, kind, and willing to work!  Ben shared that he got him from Dave and Buster's for more than 1,000 tickets!

We learned about bats today.  They are amazing mammals with some unique abilities that have had them learn to adapt to their environments.  I also heard about several personal stories and experiences about bats today from the children!

We will continue tomorrow!  Have a great evening!

An Exciting Week!

This week is always very exciting for second grade students.  Halloween is filled with fun.

We will explore Fables and Fairytales, how animals in stories can help us learn(both fiction and non-fiction), we will explore bats, bones, various math concepts like odd, even, number lines, greater than and less than, and more!

Today, we hear a fable called "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".  The children quickly learned that telling lies is not a good thing.  Being truthful is much better.  We wrote a short fairytale using story structure of:  Once upon a time, they lived happily ever after, heroes, villains, plot, beginning, middle, end.

You can see during math we made math monsters.  The children rolled dice to generate numbers for how many eyes, noses, mouths, arms, and legs to add their monster.  Then they need to tell if they were odd or even.  These monsters will hang in our room this week to help decorate the room!

Thank you to those who have been sending in the Halloween donations.

Enjoy the evening!

A Fun Friday!

Today was a wonderful day in room 14.  WE were so busy being scientists, team builders, and hard workers, that the day flew by.

This morning, after taking an extremely successful spelling test and grammar check up, the students were off to work at stations.  Today, they read about animals that glow!  Be sure to look over the Scholastic News and talk about those amazing creatures and how they have learned to adapt to their habitat and survive.  Next, they explored all types of animals on BrainPopJr. and worked on their individual skills with eSpark.  Then, working as a team, each group attempted to complete an animal/mammal 100 piece puzzle.  Unfortunately, as a class they did not complete the puzzle.  This is a skill that we will be revisiting again because there is great value in team building and puzzle solving.  Lastly, they were scientists.  Using animal puppets, the students showed what they have been learning about habitats, categorizing types of animals, and other vocabulary like "attributes".  They enjoyed the morning stations for sure!

This afternoon, we worked really well on writing and Miss. Abbey helped with conferencing some grammar and spelling.  We also had our first math test.  Some children did not finish it in the hour of time given, so extra time will be allowed on Monday.  I did show the test yesterday and went over every question and answer with them as our review.  I never want to try to trick the kids.  A test is letting me know what they have learned so far and what I need to help them learn still.

For those of you coming back to the school tonight for the Halloween Bingo, have a blast!  I'm sorry I will miss it.  I know you will have a lot of fun.

Enjoy the weekend!

The Pumpkins are Ready

Hello Families,

The pumpkins are ready to be raffled!  If your child would like to try to win a decorated pumpkin, they can bring money to school tomorrow and Friday to buy a raffle ticket.  The pumpkins will be raffled off at the Bingo night, but if you are not able to be there, they will save the pumpkin for Monday.

Thank you to those who have volunteered their time or donated items for our Halloween fun next week.  If you haven't had a chance to see the list, visit the HOME page and see the signup genius link.    In addition, if any child would like to pass out a surprise for their classmates, they are welcome to bring them in on Wednesday.  This could be pencils, vampire teeth, stickers, wrapped candy, etc.  These goodies will passed out and sent home on Thursday.

Something seems to be going around the classroom.  Please try to keep our classroom healthy by getting enough rest and fluids.  I've seen some fevers, coughs, headaches, and stuffy noses today that needed to go home early.  I hope everyone feels better soon.

Take a look at our morning stations below.  It was a great day of learning!
