Mid-Week, Wednesday

I can't believe how quickly this week is going by.  Our new chapter for math is how to regroup, break apart, and compose numbers for addition.  Using two digit numbers.  Most of us were raised calling this "carrying".  Your child will come home with some new vocabulary, but the overall idea is absolutely the same.  When working with your child please insist that they show you how they are working to solve the problem.  The most important steps that you can do to help your child is to encourage them to show their work and be able to explain it in word and written form.  It takes lots of practice, but they can do it!

We had an unofficial twins day for Sidra and Alissa!  Take a look at these beautiful twin boots!

Romero was very happy to see his Flat Stanley today.  Visit our Flat Stanley tab for the photo.

We are working on building paragraphs.  The students practiced rearranging a draft about puppies today.  We looked for sentences that were in common and rewrote the paragraph to have an easier flow/organization.  They also were asked to use some transition words to help combine sentences.  They did a nice job on this writing lesson.

The class started an animal research project this week.  They were able to choose an animal of their liking.  During media center, they checked out a non-fiction book to help start the research.  Then today, they brought the book and a graphic organizer to ISM.  Many brought the book home today, so please help them read it and gain some information.  Great things to have them learn are: habitat, food habits, very detailed description, is it known to be a predator or prey, know about how they look as babies and even interesting vocabulary.

This project will be done in school during the next several weeks.  They will be expected to do some research, using books and the internet, they will keep clear notes on their graphic organizer, they will be asked to compile that information to share, and they will be asked to present their work.  The kids were so excited!

Some upcoming information:

The Holiday Shop (A.K.A. Santa Shop) will be arriving to our school on Saturday, December 9th.  If you are free that morning and could help bring all the heavy boxes into the school, our PTO would greatly appreciate your help.  There will also be a sign up for additional helpers all week.  Monday, December 11 is set up day.  Several hands make for less work.  If you are available, please consider helping to set up the tables and all the merchandise.  Then, Tuesday-Thursday, the school shops, shops, and shops.  Oh, yes, they also wrap, wrap, and wrap some more!  If you can put on a cheerful smile, please join us for this fun event.  Our class will be shopping during our Tuesday, media center time slot.  Please visit the PTO website (A BUTTON IS ON THE HOME PAGE OF mrsfrommm.com) and sign up for a slot or two or three!

There is also another great PTO event happening at 5Below!  A flier will be coming home for the week of December 15-23.  As long as  you bring the flier to the store, the school will get a percentage of you purchase!  That money goes a long way.  It buys computers, playground equipment, software, Scholastic News, field trips, and assemblies.  If you know you are shopping, why not have Morgan get a little kick back!  Thanks!

Speaking of PTO, we have two board members who will be graduating from Morgan this spring.  Their youngest child will be moving on to junior high.  They are looking to invite new members to shadow what they do so we can continue our amazing support system for all children at Morgan.  I know finding time can be a challenge, but the rewards are amazing.  Plus, it gives people an opportunity to meet new families, see some of the behind the scene stuff here, and really feel connected to our Morgan Community.  I hope you can find it in your heart to consider a position with our PTO.

Our class will be celebrating the gifts of giving!  Along with first grade, all second grade will be enjoying some Reindeer Games on Rudolph Day.  Thursday, December 21 in the morning, the students will rotate to each room to do a craft of some sort.  A separate note will be coming home soon.  If your child was here last year, they had a chance to enjoy this crafty day.  I will be seeking some volunteers to help that day.

In addition to that, our class will also continue the celebration of gift giving on Friday, December 22.  Our morning stations will be set up all about giving to others, not receiving.  I know this is very hard for young children to understand at times, but I know they will love showing kindness to others in this gift giving way.  I can't tell you too much more, because it's meant to be a surprise for all of you!  But I may be asking for a helper or two for that day as well.  More information will come home as we enter December.

Thank you so much for all the pantry items that were sent in.  We had over 35 items donated! I'm so proud of the students for being willing to give.  Our Hat and Mitten Tree is so full, you can't even tell there is a green tree underneath all the stuff!  Finally, our Toys For Tots program is also overflowing out of the boxes and tables.  Our community is so generous, thank you!

Have a wonderful night!

Welcome Back!

I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving.  If you did some shopping, I hope you found some great deals!  Those who spent time with family and friends, I'm sure your memories will be cherished for years to come.

Upon our return, we are changing up our "Station" work.  Instead of setting a 20 minute timer and having the students rotate around the room, we will be starting the transition to making better use of their time throughout the morning.  You will see a sheet that starts with "Copy the list" then the daily papers will be attached.  If your child brings any of this home, it will be for HOMEWORK that night!  It must be returned the next day.  This list is also used as a check off.  The students can work down the list in any order after they copy it.  The purpose of copying the list is to practice penmanship.  They also will be working on organization skills during the time allowed to self monitor their work.

I also introduced some other positive behavior incentives and daily behavior charts.  If your child has a daily behavior chart, it does need to be signed every day and returned.  Please ask your child if they are being responsible and if they were asked to keep track of a daily chart.  (We have about six students who are using these currently)  The majority of the class will not have the daily chart, there just is no need, they are doing what is expected.

If  you are free tonight, there is a PTO meeting at 6:30.  I hope to see you there.

Check out Noor and his Flat Stanley!  They are still coming in, so keep watching for yours.

Take a look at who used some of their Excellent Dollars to have lunch with me today!  I loved spending that time with Giovanni and Nimrit!    Enjoy your evening.

A busy day in room 23.  Several students lost a tooth over the weekend.  Two birthday girls.  Busy with Thanksgiving writing and math!

Tomorrow will be MORGAN day.  If you ordered a class t-shirt, they are coming home today.  Have your child wear them tomorrow or any Morgan gear!  It will make for a cute class picture.

Take a look at the photos from today and their captions.

Enjoy your night!

Thank you families for taking time to meet with me during our conference window.  It is my pleasure to be your child's teacher this year.  The development and growth will be amazing to watch.

Our week finished with a fun story from the Magic School Bus series.  The students listened carefully about animal habitats.  Then they were asked to answer some comprehension questions.  I was pleased with their focus during that activity.

Monday will be our LUNCH BUNCH BOOK CLUB meeting.  I will remind the students on Monday to come back to the classroom to have lunch with me.

We had several friends out today.  When we have a day that all students are in attendance, I will be going over a new positive discipline plan with the class.  A new marking period offers new rewards!

Happy Birthday, Sophia for tomorrow!

Enjoy the weekend!
