Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Families,

I wanted to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving!  May you be surrounded by family, friends, and good food.  Those of you shopping, may you find some great deals.

Our past two days was all about the first Thanksgiving.  Really it was a harvest feast being thankful for having enough food to make it through their second winter.  We tried some Wampanoag nasaump (fancy for warmed cornmeal), delicious popcorn, and did some native drawings to tell about an experience.

We played some games, since the first Thanksgiving lasted three days with food and fun!

The class did some addition and subtraction, skip counting turkeys, and rolling some dice to build large and small numbers.

Again, I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.  See you next month!

Happy birthday to Jackson!  He surprised his classmates with two new playground balls (one is perfect for Ga-Ga Ball and the other a new soccer ball).  Thank you!

We worked with coins, place value addition with double digit numbers, possessive nouns, homographs, writing with details using descriptive words, and used technology today.  It was a great day in room 14!

Tomorrow is our spelling test.  These words look longer but are not really harder.  The first part of the words are three letter consonant digraphs and the second part of each word will be review of short and long vowel words.  I know the class will do well.  We will also have our Unit 2 Reading Theme Test tomorrow.  I will model it with the class.

Have a fantastic evening.

What a wonderful day!  The children attempted writing a free-form poem this morning.  Many used rhyming words, some found a rhythm in the writing and rereading, and others simply shared emotion in their writing.
It is fun to share poetry.

We have been practicing possessive nouns  and compound words this week.  The children are really starting to see the patterns in these words.  Keep it up!

Coming home today is math packet week 10.  This will be due next Tuesday since we do not have school on Wednesday.  I will not send home week 11 until we return from the Thanksgiving break.  I am planning to test our unit 2 math next week.  This will be on recognizing and counting coins, using place value to add double digit numbers, finding math equations in word problems.  I will show the class the test on Monday and give the same test on Tuesday next week.  I am not trying to trick them, I want them to feel confident and knowledgable.

I enjoyed eating lunch with some lovely ladies today.  Thanks for buying a coupon!

Great learning happening here!

The children were introduced to using a dictionary today.  You can see a paper coming home that we worked on in class.  They needed to find two of our spelling words in the dictionary.  We used guide words, alphabetical order skills, found how to pronounce the words, what part of speech they were, and what the meaning of the word was.  Then, they were asked to draw a picture of the meaning and use the word correctly in a sentence. This will become a part of our weekly work in spelling.

We worked on two different strategies on adding two digit numbers.  One is drawing a picture with place value and making groups of tens.  The other a shorter way to visualize the regrouping.  Unit 2, lesson 9 is coming home tonight (some did it yesterday).  We will continue to work on these.

Have a great night!

It was a full day in room 14.  The class was a bit talkative, so we needed to regroup a few times to get back to working hard and being kind to one another.  But, we still accomplished vocabulary, spelling, reading fluency, poetry, place value, fast facts in math, coin identification, and of course the use of our technology.

Tonight is our PTO meeting at Hamlin Pub starting at 6:30.  It is a great group of people to work with for a great cause...our Morgan Kids!

Have a wonderful evening.
