We enjoyed manipulating fraction circle pieces to compare equivalent fractions. Once each child had an opportunity to work with the manipulatives, they were asked to complete a paper. We did work on this together for clarification. We will continue doing this for the next several days and weeks. Comparing fractions is very visual at this age. But it is a very important skill to master for third, fourth, and fifth grades. Please continue to find real world opportunities for your child to compare fractions.
Another important part to understand and master fractions is understanding arrays. Arrays work with equal groups that can be done as repeated addition, skip counting, and multiplication. Several students made the connection today between arrays and equivalent fractions. HOORAY!
With our seven weeks or so of school to complete, the focus in math are with fractions, arrays, three digit addition and subtraction, and making the connection from skip counting (which every child did at the very beginning of second grade with their weekly math packets) to multiplication and division.
In reading, we will continue to build fluency and comprehension. Every child has shown improvements in their ability to read throughout the year. ANOTHER HOORAY! It is crucial that they continue to read for fluency and comprehension. The one minute reads for the rest of the year are more challenging. I will let the students know some goals for fluency and I will continue to build strategies for them to find success in comprehending what they are reading.
The Write and Tells are really improving! Next week is the final week for Phase Three. The Phase Four will be a true challenge for some students. I'm asking for two complete paragraphs. The goal for the end of second grade as a writer is to have confidence in writing one to three paragraphs. The current phase has really built on the understanding that paragraphs need to be indented and written on one main topic. As the children start writing two paragraphs in the coming weeks, you will see how they recognize that a new topic is starting so a new paragraph needs to start as well. Thank you for the continued support with your child.
Enjoy the evening!
