What a great day to have all the students here! They loved having media center today because our amazing "Star Lab" was here! Mr. D does an amazing job explaining the constellations to the students. Plus, this fits in perfectly with our Unit Three for reading, science and social studies. Be sure to ask your child about it today.
We started to look at easy ways to subtract. The first strategy that was introduced today was using friendly numbers (getting to tens) and using a number line to complete the math sentence. Look at the paper coming home today. The students had 75-7. We started with breaking apart the 7 to help get 75 to 70, then completed the subtraction using the number line. Breaking 7 apart to 5+2 brought us from 75 to 70, then we just jumped back two spots to 68. 68 is the answer. Working with small numbers makes this strategy very easy. A quick way to find the difference is always working with friendly numbers.
This morning, we worked with contractions. The students had fun grouping themselves to find a match to their contraction, which part of the word was hiding in the apostrophe, and what two words made up the contraction.

We also had an unofficial twins day for Alissa and Makayla! Plus, I enjoyed eating lunch with Makayla, Jack, and Gavin. They used some excellence dollars to buy a coupon to eat lunch with the teacher. I'm the luckiest teacher around!
Don't forget, tomorrow is our LUNCH BUNCH BOOK CLUB! To the best of my knowledge, I have six students joining me for lunch to talk about our Coco story. Watch for a new book order to head home soon. Thanks for the support.
