Welcome back after our winter break. The students were excited to tell me all about their break. It sounds like several kept very busy with vacations, sleepovers, going to the movies, and playing games.
I enjoyed the week with my family and some friends skiing up north. We were able to enjoy the slopes before the rain arrived. We filled our rainy days with games and great company. Then returned home for dentist appointments, swim meets, and soccer.
This week we will review three digit addition and subtraction. The chapter test will be Thursday. Speed math continues. The students who have earned their first scoop of ice cream are now working on regrouping in subtraction. I extended the time limit to five minutes. Some are taking it home to practice, which is always a good idea. Others are missing just one before being able to move on. I do tell them to check their work instead of drawing on the back if the timer is still going. This is a hard skill to master, that check your work! But most errors are simple mistakes of just going to too fast.
Our reading skills this week starts with our new unit. The next five weeks we will be expanding on our social studies skills. Maps, regions, vocabulary, landforms, and some science along the way.
The students enjoyed looking in microscopes today. They observed pencil shavings, water, rock salt, and a crumbled piece of sugary cereal. It was fun to see their reactions with the items magnified. I will keep the microscopes in the classroom all week to enjoy.
Tomorrow is a PTO meeting beginning at 6:30 in our library. I know everyone is welcome!
Have a great evening.
